Diabetes: think about it?
There are so many people worldwide that are affected with diabetes and every year goes higher and higher and the demographics are getting younger too. It’s hard for people to know they have it since the symptoms are often neglected as nothing too serious until it’s too late. But diabetes is a treatable and preventable disease and one way to do it is advocating the diet for diabetics.
Sugar or glucose is the body’s primary source of energy. It helps the body move, digest food, think; it basically keeps us alive. Good as sugar may be for our bodies, too much of the stuff can make us sick and can even kill us. Although insulin injections are very important in treating diabetes, the mainstream management for this disease is not dependent only on one kind of treatment and one of the necessary steps in help curing this disease is the so called diet for diabetics.
Nutrition plays a major role in treating and preventing diabetes. There are quite a lot of diets for diabetics but none made so much attention than the
low glycemic diet. Glycemic index or Gi is how carbs in food affect sugar levels in the body. Basically, a low glycemic index is very favorable for diabetics because sugar fluctuations are very minimal and also body fat index would also be low allaying the risk for heart disease. But following a diet plan can get tiring especially with so much temptations outside the home.
Following a
diabetic diet plan or any diet is hard. There are so many considerations to factor in like the GI of the food item, how much to eat and what kind of meal to cook. It’s even harder now that fast food chains and instant foods are everywhere and it tempts anyone to eat them for the sake of convenience. But there are ways to make dieting fun and here are some tips on how. Find recipes that you like and start changing things that can be beneficial for you. This kind of activity encourages creativity and can greatly enhance your food knowledge. Another is creating your own dishes which allow you to find alternatives for certain ingredients and cook up really good food. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.
It is important to note that as of now, there is no cure for diabetes. But that doesn’t mean that we cannot prevent the disease. We can. Diet is just one aspect in treating and preventing the disease. Simple lifestyle changes can make plenty of differences like stopping smoking, eating healthier, exercising, and limiting consumption of alcohol.
Diabetes can be a burden for many. It has taken many lives and has made many miserable. But rather than surrendering yourself to the disease why not fight it. Why not just start eating healthily or start riding a bike. It’s all about changing your attitude and once you start doing it, it just becomes second nature.
